pro tips
Divide by 1,000: 10,000 bytes is 10 KB. Or 9.77 KiB in binary.
A page of plain text is roughly 2 to 4 KB — a few thousand bytes.
If the number doesn't divide cleanly, you're probably looking at binary KiB, not decimal KB.
what it does
One kilobyte is 1,000 bytes, so a byte is 0.001 kilobytes. Divide bytes by 1,000 and the kilobytes appear, which is how a plain-text file stops looking like a character count and starts looking like a file size.
It shows up when a log or a database reports bytes and a file browser shows kilobytes, when a text document's size is checked against an email limit, when an API returns a byte count and the UI formats it, and in any system where the smallest unit and the display unit disagree.
The shortcut: 1,000 bytes is 1 KB, so 500 bytes is 0.5 KB, 10,000 bytes is 10 KB, and a page of plain text is typically 2 to 4 KB. Software counting 1,024 gives you kibibytes instead, which is where the "close enough" gap lives.
Type any byte value and the widget answers in kilobytes instantly, with the math in the hint. Click to copy, and swap when a kilobyte figure has to be expanded back into bytes.
quick answers
How much is 500 bytes in kilobytes?
0.5 KB in decimal, or about 0.49 KiB in binary. Half a kilobyte is a short paragraph of text and a tidy illustration of the two counting systems.
Is 1,024 bytes a kilobyte?
In binary terms, a kibibyte (KiB). Decimal KB says 1,000.
Why convert bytes to kilobytes?
Because logs and code count in bytes while people and file managers think in kilobytes.
