Kilobytes per second to kilobits per second converter

Convertersconversion pair

Convert KB/s to Kbps instantly: 1 KB/s is 8 Kbps. The same divide-by-eight, one prefix down, for slow links and small transfers.

eight kilobits hide inside every kilobyte, waiting to look impressive.

pro tips

Multiply by 8, not by 1,000. The prefix does not change, only the bit and byte distinction.

16 KB/s is 128 Kbps — the same stream described by a download tool and an audio settings menu.

For anything above 1,000 Kbps, switch to Mbps to keep the numbers readable.

what it does

One kilobyte per second is eight kilobits per second. Multiply by eight and a modest byte rate becomes the larger-looking bit rate that a legacy device or a radio link might advertise.

This direction is useful when a logger or an audio tool reports KB/s and a network spec talks in Kbps. A 16 KB/s stream is 128 Kbps, which is the familiar number printed on old MP3 settings.

Examples: 8 KB/s is 64 Kbps, 40 KB/s is 320 Kbps, and 125 KB/s is 1,000 Kbps. The last one is also 1 Mbps, which is the point where the kilobit era ends.

Type a kilobytes-per-second value and the widget returns kilobits per second live. Copy the answer, or swap to the Kbps-to-KB/s page if the units are the other way around.

quick answers

Why does 16 KB/s equal 128 Kbps?

Because a byte is eight bits, and the kilo prefix is the same on both sides. 16 × 8 = 128.

Can a 128 Kbps stream really fit in 16 KB/s?

Yes. It is the same rate expressed in bytes instead of bits. The file size follows from the byte rate, not the bit rate.

Is KB/s ever written KBps?

Sometimes, but it is ambiguous. The clearer forms are KB/s or kB/s for kilobytes and Kbps for kilobits.
