most-used utilities
Blog post URL
Paste the working title, cut it to the four words a reader would search for, and publish. Future-you will not miss the version that said final-final-v2 in the file name.
Image file names
Rename IMG_4821.jpg to what the photo actually shows. A descriptive slug helps image search and makes a folder readable without opening every file.
Product pages
Turn Blue Cotton T-Shirt / XL into blue-cotton-t-shirt-xl. Clean, stable, and short enough to fit on a label.
pro tips
Front-load the words that matter. Search results and link previews often cut a long URL, so the first three or four words do most of the work.
Do not rename a slug after publishing. If the title changes, keep the old URL alive with a redirect, because dead links are a tax on everyone.
Skip filler words when you can. The words the, and, of and a rarely help a URL, unless removing them turns the phrase into nonsense.
what it does
Paste a headline or a sentence and the slug appears underneath, already lowercased, without accents and with every space turned into a hyphen. It updates as you type, so you can see which words survive the trip before you commit them to a URL.
The tidy-up happens in a sensible order. Apostrophes vanish, an ampersand becomes the word and, letters like é and ü lose their accents, and anything that is not a letter or a number becomes a separator. Runs of separators collapse into one, and nothing is allowed to dangle at either end.
Writers use it for blog post URLs, developers for image file names and anchor links, and marketers for campaign paths that people can read out loud. A slug like 10-reasons-to-stop-using-spaces is easier to share, remember and paste into a chat than a string of percent signs.
You can switch the separator to an underscore, keep the original capitalization, or leave accents alone when the destination supports them. Everything runs in the browser: no URL is checked against a server, no slug is reserved, and nothing you paste leaves the page.
quick answers
What is a URL slug?
A slug is the readable part of a URL that identifies the page, usually the last segment. In example.com/blog/clean-urls, the slug is clean-urls. It exists for humans first and for search engines second.
Should URLs use hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens are the safer default for web pages, because search engines treat them as word separators. Underscores are common in code and file names. The widget lets you switch, but pick one and stay consistent across a site.
Do accents belong in a slug?
They work, but browsers percent-encode them, so café turns into something like caf%C3%A9 when copied. Stripping the accent gives you cafe: shorter, friendlier and easier to say out loud.
