most-used utilities
Write a check
Get the words for the amount line, then copy them before your handwriting makes it worse.
Draft an invoice
Put the total in words next to the figures so nobody argues about a missing zero.
Read a big number
Paste a figure from a report and find out how to say it without pausing mid-sentence.
pro tips
On a check, write the words first and the digits second. It is harder to slip an extra zero into a sentence than into a number.
Hyphens belong in compound tens: thirty-four, not thirty four. Banks are surprisingly relaxed about it; lawyers are not.
For legal amounts, spell out the currency too. The widget gives you the number, but only you know whether it is dollars, euros or favors.
what it does
Type a number and read it back in plain English. The converter handles whole numbers from zero to nine hundred ninety-nine billion, plus one or two decimal places for the cases where fractions matter. No currency is assumed, so it works the same for dollars, euros or kilometers.
Decimals come out the way people say them out loud: 1234.5 becomes one thousand two hundred thirty-four and five tenths, and 0.25 becomes twenty-five hundredths. A trailing zero disappears, so 12.50 reads as twelve and five tenths rather than fifty hundredths.
This is the version of a number that survives a bad photocopy. Use it on a check, a lease, an invoice, a settlement offer or any contract where somebody might later add a digit. Writing the amount twice, once in figures and once in words, is an old habit precisely because it works.
The input accepts commas and spaces, so pasting 1,250,000 from a spreadsheet is fine. A third decimal gets rounded to the nearest hundredth, and anything past the billions limit is refused with a note instead of a wrong answer. The whole conversion runs locally in the browser.
quick answers
How high can the numbers go?
Up to nine hundred ninety-nine billion nine hundred ninety-nine million nine hundred ninety-nine thousand nine hundred ninety-nine, with two decimal places. Beyond that the widget says no rather than inventing a word for it.
What happens with three or more decimals?
The value is rounded to the nearest hundredth before it is spelled. Two decimals is the practical limit for money, and spelling out more digits tends to create more confusion than it removes.
Does it include the currency?
No. The output is the number in words only, so it fits dollars, euros, pounds or anything else you are counting. Add the unit yourself where the document expects it.
