pro tips
A high density is not automatically bad. Short functional words repeat constantly; a rare noun repeating ten times usually means the paragraph is circling.
Run the counter before and after editing. The word that disappears from the top ten is often the one you were overusing.
For keyword research, compare your density with the page that already ranks. Matching it exactly is not the goal; noticing that you wrote the term twice in 1,800 words is.
what it does
Paste an article, a speech, a pile of reviews or your own draft, and the widget counts how often each word appears. The top twenty show up in order, each with a count and a density percentage, so the words you lean on become visible instead of lurking in paragraph three.
Density is the share of all counted words that a single word represents. With the stop-word filter on, common glue such as the and of is removed from both the list and the denominator, which makes the numbers about your actual vocabulary rather than grammar glue.
Writers use it to catch accidental repetition, editors use it to check whether a page is really about its topic, and anyone who has ever written a cover letter can use it to discover that passionate appears four times in two paragraphs.
The count ignores capitalization and punctuation, so The and the land in the same bucket, and don't stays one word instead of splitting into don and t. Everything is computed in the browser, which means a confidential draft never leaves the tab.
quick answers
How is density calculated?
Each count is divided by the total number of words considered, then shown as a percentage with one decimal. With the stop-word filter on, filtered words are excluded from the total as well, so the percentages describe the vocabulary that remains.
What counts as a stop word?
Common English function words such as the, of, to and is, plus pronouns such as it and they. The list is fixed and short on purpose: it removes grammar, not meaning.
Does punctuation split words?
No. Words are matched as letters and numbers with internal apostrophes kept, so don't and company's stay single tokens. Hyphenated compounds split at the hyphen.
