most-used utilities
A printed report
Bottom center, "Page {n} of {total}", starting at 1.
A contract excerpt
Bottom right, "{n}", starting at the original page number.
A thesis
Bottom center, font size 10, margin 24 points.
pro tips
Use bottom center for reports and bottom right for contracts; both are familiar and unobtrusive.
Keep the margin above 16 points so the number is not lost in the printer's unprintable edge.
For an excerpt, set the starting number to the page it had in the original document.
what it does
Choose a PDF and add a page number to every page. You control the format (Page 1 of 12), the position (bottom center, bottom right, top center or top right), the starting number and the margin.
It is the finishing touch for a printed report, a contract, a thesis or a scanned book that is missing its pagination. Page numbers make a document easier to reference and harder to shuffle by accident.
The default format is "Page {n} of {total}", where {n} is the current number and {total} is the page count. You can write just "{n}", "p. {n}" or any other text. The starting number lets an excerpt begin at 47 instead of 1.
The numbers are drawn as real PDF text with a standard Helvetica font, so they remain selectable and searchable. Everything runs locally with pdf-lib.
quick answers
Are the page numbers real text?
Yes. They are drawn with an embedded standard font, so they can be selected and searched in a PDF viewer.
Can I start numbering at a number other than 1?
Yes. Set the starting number to whatever the excerpt or continuation needs.
Is the PDF uploaded?
No. The numbers are added in your browser with pdf-lib.
